What the IP grade in outdoor led lighting power wire waterproof connector

As we all know, almost of cable wire layout design in outdoor led lighting requires waterproof and dust-proof, because in relative, outdoor environment is more tough and hard, it will be high requirement for outdoor wire installation. According the experience of our negotiation with customers, in fact there are many people that they have little or no understanding of the waterproof IP grade, so they often put forward some difficult to understand requirements. In this article, we mainly talk about two key points, one is waterproof IP grade definition & standards, the other one is what we have waterproof IP grade on our wire waterproof connectors at present.

• What is waterproof IP grade?

The IP rating is used to define the sealing effect of the electrical enclosure against the intrusion of foreign objects, including dust and moisture. In definition, the IP will be followed by two digits, such as IPXX, and each digit have a specific meaning. The first digit indicates the level of protection of the closed equipment against foreign bodies, which is commonly said to be the dust level; and the second digit defines the level of protection of the enclosure from various forms of moisture that is the waterproof level. In the outdoor wire waterproof connector industrial, we usually the waterproof level, that is why we usually focus on the second digit in reality.

IP dust proof grade judgment- the first digit.

IP1X: effective against foreign bodies larger than 50mm;

IP2X: effective against foreign bodies larger than 12.5mm;

IP3X: effective against foreign bodies larger than 2.5mm;

IP4X: effective against foreign bodies larger than 1.0mm;

IP5X: some dust may get through, but not enough to damage the product;

IP6X: completely dust proof.

IP water proof grade judgment- the second digit.

IPX1: prevent the droplets from falling vertically for 10 minutes, it is equivalent to 1mm of rainfall per minute

IPX2: when tilting 15 ° from normal positions, prevent the equipment from being soaked for 10 minutes, equivalent to 3mm of rainfall per minute;

IPX3: the water is sprayed in the angle of 60 ° from the vertical direction and lasted 10 minutes. Water volume: 10 liters per minute. Pressure: 50-150kPa;

IPX4: water splashed from any direction to the shell for 10min. Water volume: 10 liters per minute. Pressure 50-150kPa;

IPX5:  spray (6.3mm) spray water from any direction for 3min water. Water: 12.5 liters per minute, pressure: 30 kPa;

IPX6: water sprayed from any direction in any direction to 3min on the shell in a powerful shot (12.5mm). Water: 100 liters per minute: 100 kPa;

IPX7: immersed in 1 meter deep water for 30min;

IPX8: soak in 1 meter deep water for more than 1 hour.

About the IPX8, the manufacturer will indicate the exact conditions of use according to the model. In fact, there is no completely waterproof grade, because it will be different IP rating in the different environment, such as the same  20meter underwater in the pool or in the sea, that is different IP rating. In this way, what the IP68 we said in the industrial is the IP rating is more than IP67 standard that is IP68. So theoretically, there is no IP69, but our many clients will get this wrong information from not professional suppliers.

• What the IP rating on AOHUA wire waterproof connector

At present, our AOHUA connectors are usually made in IP65, IP67 and IP68. The different rating is on the different material. In common, the connectors of PVC material injection are waterproof IP65; the connectors of nylon material injection are waterproof IP67; while the IP68, the connectors will be made in special treatment, for instance, the nylon material connector inside will be done glue filling to achieve better waterproof effect.

In AOHUA, there are PVC/nylon material at present. The PVC connectors is one-time injection with PVC material, the waterproof level is IP65, so this connectors are used the lighting projection commonly. While the nylon connector have IP67 or IP68, the assembly type connectors or over mold connectors are IP67, are used projects of higher waterproof requirement; but the IP68 connectors will be filled with glue inside, these connectors will be used underwater usually for long time.

Whatever the waterproof rating is, It will not required IP68 if the connectors use to outdoor commonly, because that is not be too much long time that connector immersed in waterproof at outdoor environment.
